Dry Brushing

Weston Dentist Dr Pyle Offers Tooth Brushing Advice—Start Dry!

You just had your teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist and your teeth feel clean, shiny and fresh. So what can you do to keep that feeling, and surprise your hygienist with less tartar at your next regular visit?

Did You Know That Dry Brushing is More Effective?

Clinical data from studying a technique called “Dry Brushing” (brushing your teeth without toothpaste or water) indicates that this method of teeth brushing is both effective in reducing plaque build-up (down by 63%) and gum bleeding (down by 50%) during the course of the study. One thought is that the slippery feel of toothpaste in your mouth can mask the sensitivity of your tongue to the plaque so that you think your teeth are cleaner than they actually are.

Eventually the soft bacterial plaque buildup that you leave on your teeth will form into the hard tarter the dental hygienist has to remove from your teeth (especially inside the front bottom teeth).

How Do You “Dry Brush” Your Teeth?

We tell all our Weston dental patients to use a soft, dry toothbrush, and start brushing the inside of the bottom teeth. Then you should proceed to clean the inside upper teeth and finally all the outer surfaces of your teeth.Brush this way until the teeth feel and taste clean (about 90 seconds).

But Isn’t Using Toothpaste Important?

Absolutely! The next step in our recommended “dry brushing” process is to add a fluoride-containing toothpaste and water to your toothbrush in order to polish and add fluoride to the cleaned teeth.Dental professionals such as Weston Dentist Dr Pyle have long known that it is the correct brushing technique that removes the sticky plaque from your teeth. The toothpaste delivers the all-important fluoride ingredient that strengthens tooth-enamel and fights decay. It is simply a personal preference of flavor and polishing/whitening when choosing a fluoride toothpaste, though in general, the “white” toothpastes have less additives and cause less gum sensitivity than the “blue” toothgels.
