Weston Dentist Dr Pyle Urges Patients with Gum Disease to be Aware of a New Health Plan Benefit:
Most medical insurance plans now cover treatment with Arestin® (minocycline), and our office is pleased to offer this payment option to our patients with periodontal disease.Yes, that’s right, the prescription drug plan of your medical insurance (not dental) now covers this therapy.
What is Arestin®?
Arestin® is an antibiotic that kills gum disease-causing bacteria below the gum line. Our staff applies the minocycline microspheres right into the infected gums pockets at the time of your deep-cleaning procedure called SRP.During a SRP cleaning (scaling and root planning) we remove a great deal of the bacteria that cause periodontal infection, but we can’t get all the bacteria that hide in the bottom of infected pockets. That’s why we like to use a locally administered antibiotic powder such as Arestin®.
How effective is Arestin®?
Clinical studies have shown that the treatment combination of SRP and Arestin® is more effective that just SRP alone. Arestin® effects last up to 3 months, which is the timeframe that anyone with gum disease needs to re-visit the dentist. Arestin® controls moderately deep pockets (up to 6mm) to help prevent severe gum disease where deeper pockets may require surgical treatment.According to the American Academy of Periodontology, people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to have coronary artery disease (also called heart disease).
How do I get my prescription drug plan to pay for Arestin®?
Weston dentist Dr Pyle will write a prescription and our staff will send it to a national pharmacy via fax along with your prescription drug plan information. A pharmacy staff member will contact you by phone and ask you to pay the corresponding co-payment. The medication will then be sent to our office on your behalf. We will deliver the medication to your gum pockets at the time of your next deep cleaning, or even during an additional appointment, if necessary.
Do you charge an extra fee for delivering the Arestin®?
Our Weston Dental Office believes in practicing preventative dentistry, and so since this is such an important benefit for our patients with gum disease we DO NOT charge an extra fee for Arestin® application beyond the charges for a deep cleaning. This is part of our philosophy of offering superior care to our Weston dental patients! As of now, we are the only Weston area dental office offering this service to our patients.
