Since they can’t decay or cause cavities you may think that if you have dental implants it’s just set it and forget it. You would be wrong. To maintain successful dental implants you need to have a good daily routine to maintain clean and healthy gums. It’s the tissue in your gums that supports the bone and therefore the implants. Without a regular routine to keep you gums free of plaque and bacteria you are vulnerable to a condition called peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis can damage the gums around the implant causing you to lose the implants.
If you have a single tooth implant you don’t have to adjust your normal oral health routine too much. You routine should include:
- Using a Waterpik
- Brushing twice daily with a low-abrasive toothpaste, particularly under and around the implant crown
- Flossing
- Using a night guard if your grind your teeth to alleviate pressure and protect the implant
- Schedule professional cleanings twice a a year
For removable overdentures, the routine is different:
- Attend routine dental checkups
- Monitor locator caps, o-rings and clips for wear and tear and contact your dentist right away if they need to be replaced
- Remove your dentures and clean and rinse them after each meal with a denture brush
- Brush around your implants while your dentures are out
- Avoid abrasive toothpaste
Because of their design, fixed bridges can present some challenges in keeping them clean. Plaque and food can get caught underneath causing bad breath. Here are some tips for maintaining fixed bridges:
- Brush at least twice a day with a soft-bristle toothbrush
- Use a Waterpik 1-2 times daily
- Brush your the area where your gums meet the bridge regularly with an an ADA approved sulcus brush
- Rinse every day with disinfecting mouthwash
- Attend routine checkups and cleanings with your dentist
- Floss under the bridge daily
