Periodontal Care

Did you know that gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults? Periodontal disease affects one out of every two Americans over the age of 30 according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fortunately, periodontal disease is almost entirely preventable. With First Weston Dental, you can enjoy a smile that looks, feels, and functions at its best, as well as maintain optimal periodontal health.

  • What is Periodontal Disease?

The periodontium, or the hard and soft tissues around and supporting your teeth, is affected by gum disease, which is an inflammatory condition. In the same way that dental plaque contributes to tooth decay, dental tartar contributes to gum disease.

Periodontal disease progresses without causing pain, so you may not even be aware of it. As a result, it is important to practice good oral hygiene and schedule regular checkups and cleanings.

It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of gum disease when caring for your smile.

Some indications that you may have periodontal disease include:

    • Red and inflamed gums
    • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
    • Exposed root surfaces and receding gums
    • Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
    • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
    • Teeth that feel loose
    • New spaces developing between the teeth or a change in the bite
    • Change in the fit of existing partial dentures
    • Discharge around the teeth and gums
    • Sharp or dull pain when biting down or chewing food
  • Why is Periodontal Health Important?

A healthy smile doesn't just keep your teeth and gums in great condition; it also supports your overall health. In addition to being the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, researchers are finding more and more links between periodontal disease and a number of medical conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory problems.

The importance of prevention, early detection, and timely treatment of periodontal disease is emphasized at First Weston Dental. In order to maintain optimal periodontal health, we provide patients with guidance, support, and care.

  • What is Gingivitis?

Gum disease begins with gingivitis. There are specific signs you should be aware of that indicate the start of a problem, even when it doesn't cause overt discomfort. You more than likely have gingivitis if your gums bleed while you brush, are red and inflamed, or feel tender.

The good news is that gingivitis can be treated early to avoid the tissue damage associated with more advanced stages of gum disease. Despite the presence of inflammation, the periodontal tissues remain intact during this stage.

Periodontal disease can often be reversed if treatment is initiated at this stage and permanent periodontal damage is avoided. Periodontal disease at this stage can be prevented with a series of deep dental cleanings, an improved home care regimen, and regular maintenance.

  • What is Periodontitis?

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, a more advanced and damaging stage of gum disease. At this stage, the connective tissue and bone that hold the teeth in place are breaking down. The loss of tissue increases as a result of periodontal disease and periodontitis. Among the damage is an increase in pocketing between the teeth and bone, gum recession, and bone loss. The soft and hard tissues that support teeth are compromised as untreated periodontitis progresses from mild to moderate to severe.

During this phase, the goal of periodontal therapy is to stop the progression of the disease and to restore tooth stability as much as possible. In some cases, medications are used to control the bacteria and reduce the size of the pockets between the teeth and gums, as well as gum surgery and bone and tissue grafting.

  • How is Gum Disease Treated?

Periodontal treatment can vary depending on several factors, including the stage of periodontal disease, the extent of tissue damage, your overall oral health, existing medical conditions, and other factors. Following a thorough assessment of your case, we will discuss your options for restoring and maintaining optimal periodontal health. We are always available to answer questions and address concerns.
